Women's Self-Defense Classes in North Phoenix — BJJ Built for Real Life
Most self-defense programs teach you to strike and hope for the best. The problem is that most real-world confrontations — especially for women — end up in a clinch or on the ground, where striking becomes ineffective. BJJ was specifically developed to give a smaller, lighter person the tools to control and submit a larger attacker from any position. Mike Martin is a 4th-degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Strong Heart's program focuses on the situations most likely to happen: grabs, chokes, pins, and ground control — with techniques that work under stress without years of training to execute.
Our Training Approach — Why This Program Is Different
Strong Heart Academy's Women's Self-Defense program is part of our Intro to BJJ class. We incorporate common self-defense scenarios using Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu's built-in safety mechanism — tapping — to train realistically while keeping students safe.
We also encourage women to train with men, since statistically, most women are assaulted by a man rather than a woman. Training with male partners helps women build real, tested confidence against the size and strength dynamics they're most likely to actually face. This is what makes Strong Heart's program different from most women's self-defense classes — it's not choreography. It's live training against real resistance.
Most self-defense classes teach techniques against a cooperative partner. At Strong Heart, we use tried-and-true scenarios with live resistance — meaning your training partner actually resists, the way a real threat would. The tap-out mechanism keeps training safe at full intensity.
