Before Your First Class — What to Bring & Know
+
Arrive 15 minutes early — gives you time to get changed, meet a coach, and ask any questions before class begins.
Bring water
You will sweat. Stay hydrated before, during, and after class.
Wear easy-change clothing
You'll change into your gi at the academy. Loose athletic clothing works best. Girls must wear a sports bra.
Sandal-type shoes
Shoes stay off the mat. Sandals make it easy to slip on and off.
Remove all jewelry
Rings, earrings, necklaces, and bracelets must come off before stepping on the mat.
Trim your nails
Short nails protect your training partners. Check before every class.
Shower before and after class
Personal hygiene is non-negotiable in a grappling environment. Every time, no exceptions.
Stay after class to learn about our programs
Make a few minutes after your first class to speak with a coach — no pressure.
★ Black Belt Detail — How to Tie Your BJJ Belt
The belt is tied with intention — not just to stay on, but to represent where you are in your journey. A white belt tied correctly and worn with the right mindset is worth more than a black belt worn carelessly. Get the habit right from day one.

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? — Rules, Positions & How It Works
+

Before your first class it helps to understand what BJJ actually is and how a match works. This short overview covers the basic rules, the positions you'll encounter in every class, and how the scoring and submission system works. Two and a half minutes here will make everything that follows make more sense.

🥋
Sport BJJ
Gi (uniform) or No-Gi (rash guard). Competitive grappling with scoring, positions, and submissions.
MMA & Self Defense
Same techniques apply when people grapple in MMA or in real-world self-defense situations.
📅
Day 1 — What to Expect in Class
+

Your first class starts with warm-ups and BJJ movement drills, then moves into Closed Guard fundamentals, a position lesson, and optional live positional sparring. No experience needed — just show up.

Class structure — in order
1
Warm-ups and BJJ movements
General warm-up followed by the fundamental mat movements every BJJ student drills.
2
Closed Guard drills
The first position every new student learns — both from the top and the bottom.
3
Position lesson
A focused technique block covering the day's primary position and techniques.
4
Live positional sparring (optional)
Apply what you learned in a controlled, focused setting. Always optional for new students.
Training is positional sparring only — no full sparring until you're ready. You learn by doing, in a safe and controlled environment, before progressing to the Fundamentals class where full sparring begins.
★ Black Belt Detail — What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
BJJ has two goals that overlap more than most beginners realize — sport and self-defense. The positions, submissions, and escapes are the same. The context changes. Understanding both from day one gives you a complete picture of why every technique is worth learning.
★ Black Belt Detail — Day 1: What to Expect
The first class is not about technique — it's about comfort. The goal is to leave feeling like you belong on the mat. Every question you have is one someone else in the room had on their first day too. Ask it out loud. That's what the first class is for.

The Building Blocks — Movement Fundamentals
+

Before any technique, BJJ requires a vocabulary of movements. These are the physical building blocks every white belt drills until they become automatic. Master these and every technique you learn later will make sense faster.

Drop Falls
Learning to fall safely in any direction — the first safety skill every student develops.
🦐
3-Point Shrimp
The hip escape movement that powers guard recovery and bottom escapes. The most important movement in BJJ.
⬆️

Escapes & Defense — Bad Position Framework: Frame first · Don't get submitted · Don't let their position progress · Apply the escape. In that order, every time.
🎯
Your First Priorities — What to Focus On as a White Belt
+

In order of importance. The list builds on itself — start at the top and the rest follows naturally.

1
Consistent training — 2x per week minimum. Consistency beats intensity every time at white belt.
2
Tap early, tap often — protect yourself, learn the position, come back tomorrow.
3
Understand positions — know where you are before trying to do anything.
4
Position, posture, balance, frames, and grips — the five fundamentals everything else is built on.
5
Movement over strength — technique multiplies force. Strength fights technique. Technique wins.
6
Hip movement and breathing — two things beginners forget under pressure. Both are trainable habits.
7
Learn escapes & guard retention — surviving bad positions is just as important as attacking from good ones.
8
Learn guard passing — every position starts or passes through the guard. Understanding it early accelerates everything else.

Caring for Your Gi — First Wash Instructions
+

Your gi is an investment. A few simple care habits from day one will keep it fitting correctly and lasting for years. Most shrinkage happens in the first few washes — follow these steps every time.

1
First Soak
Soak in 1 cup of white vinegar for 30 minutes before the first wash. Sets the color and reduces shrinkage.
2
Wash Alone
First wash — wash the gi by itself in cold water. No other clothing in the load.
3
Always Hang Dry
Never put the gi in the dryer. Always hang dry to prevent shrinking. Every time, no exceptions.
4
After Every Class
Wash the gi after every single class. Never let a used gi sit in a bag — bacteria grows fast.
Never put your gi in the dryer. Even one dryer cycle can shrink it enough to make it unwearable. Hang dry every time — no exceptions.

Efficient Movement — The Engine of BJJ
How to move on the mat with purpose and minimal wasted energy
+

Before learning any technique, a BJJ student must first develop a vocabulary of movement. These are not warm-up drills — they are the physical language that makes every escape, sweep, and submission possible. White belts who drill these movements daily progress faster than those who skip them.

The Hip Escape (Shrimping) The engine of BJJ. Use your feet and hips to create space rather than pushing with your arms. Every escape, every guard recovery, every submission defense starts with this movement.
The Technical Stand-Up How to get up safely from the ground while managing distance and protecting your head. Essential for both sport and self-defense.
Bridging & Breakfalls How to bridge to create upward explosive force, and how to fall safely without absorbing impact in your joints. These protect you and make you dangerous.

Drop Falls
★ Black Belt Detail — Efficient Movement
New students instinctively push with their arms when they feel pressure. Arms tire in seconds. Hips never tire. The moment you learn to move your hips instead of pressing with your hands is the moment BJJ starts making sense — and the moment bigger, stronger training partners stop feeling impossible to deal with.
🎯
Positional Dominance — Control Before Finish
How to use dominant positions to control an opponent
+

In BJJ, position comes before submission. A practitioner who controls a dominant position is winning — even before any submission attempt. Learning to maintain these positions is just as important as learning how to get there.

The Positional Hierarchy Guard → Side Control → Mount → Back Control. Each position offers more control and more submission options than the one before it. Understanding the hierarchy tells you where you are and where to go next.
Mount Control — Staying Heavy Wide base, grapevine hooks, weight distributed low and forward. The goal is to make the person on the bottom feel like the ceiling just fell on them while you stay relaxed and in control.
Side Control Fundamentals The cross-face and the underhook are the two tools that keep an opponent pinned flat. Without both, even a dominant position becomes easy to escape.

★ Black Belt Detail — Positional Dominance
Most beginners rush to submit. A black belt is patient because they know a controlled position is already winning. When you stop chasing submissions and start focusing on making your control suffocating, submissions present themselves on their own — often within the same breath.
⚖️
Leverage — Multiply Force, Reduce Effort
How to multiply force and strength regardless of size
+

BJJ's most important promise — that a smaller person can control and submit a larger one — is only possible through leverage. This is not a motivational statement. It is physics. The techniques in this section teach you to use bone structure, angles, and the power of your hips to multiply force far beyond what muscle alone can generate.

Frames vs. Muscles Use forearms and shins — bone structure — to carry a heavier opponent's weight instead of pressing with muscle. Frames create distance without exhausting you.
Posture & Base in the Guard A straight spine and a wide stable base from the top neutralize an opponent's pulling power from closed guard. Compromised posture is the first step toward being swept or submitted.
Breaking Posture from Closed Guard Use the strength of your legs — pulling knees to chest — and grip control to break the top person down. Legs are far stronger than arms. This is leverage in its most direct form.
The Power of the Hips An armbar demonstration: your entire hip complex against the strength of a single elbow joint. Technique against muscle. The hips always win.

Closed Guard — Posture Breakdown — fundamental leverage concept
4
Scissor Sweep to Triangle — leverage chained into submission
★ Black Belt Detail — Leverage
When a technique feels like it requires strength, that's a signal the angle is wrong — not that you need to push harder. Every BJJ technique has an optimal angle where it becomes nearly effortless. Finding that angle is the work of a white belt. Trusting that angle instead of muscling through it is the work of a blue belt. Using it automatically without thinking is the work of a black belt.
🔓
Basic Escapes — Survive First, Escape Second
How to get out of bad positions safely
+

Every practitioner spends time in bad positions — especially at white belt. The question is not whether you end up on the bottom. The question is what you do when you get there. These three escapes cover the positions new students face most often and give you a clear, repeatable process for getting out safely.

The Bad Position Framework — in order every time: Frame · Don't get submitted · Don't let their position progress · Apply the escape.
The Trap & Roll (Upa) Mount Escape Trap an arm and a leg on the same side, bridge explosively, roll a heavier opponent off the mount. The most fundamental escape in BJJ — works against everyone when done correctly.
The Elbow-Knee (Shrimp) Mount Escape Frame on the hips, turn to the side, slide a knee through to recover guard. Requires timing and hip movement more than strength.
Recovering Guard from Side Control Bridge to create a fraction of space, insert a frame, bring the legs back into the fight. The underhook is the key — depth matters more than speed.

Mount Escape
1
Mount Escape — Bump (Bridging) — Trap & Roll / Upa
★ Black Belt Detail — Mount Escape Bump
When you bridge to escape the mount, your feet must be pulled tight to your hips — not extended out. Feet far from your hips means your bridge goes flat instead of vertical. A vertical bridge creates lift. A flat bridge just rocks you side to side and your opponent stays on top. Hips high, feet close, and you'll move someone twice your size.
Headlock Escape
2
Headlock Escape — real-world self-defense application
Side Control Escape
3
Side Control Underhook Escape
★ Black Belt Detail — Side Control Underhook Escape
Most beginners stop the underhook at the armpit and wonder why they can't turn. The underhook needs to be deep — elbow below their shoulder blade, not just touching it. From there, keep your elbow pinned to your ribs as you hip turn into them. Deep hook and a tight elbow together is what creates the leverage to come up. One without the other and the escape stalls.
Back Escape
4
Back Escape — RNC — defending the highest value position
★ Black Belt Detail — Basic Escapes
The goal of an escape is not to win — it is to not lose. Frame first. Survive the submission threat. Then create space. Then escape. Beginners try to reverse the order and attempt the escape before they've protected themselves from the submission. That's why they get caught. Slow down, frame, and survive first. The escape opportunity always comes when you stop panicking.
🔒
Submission Defense — Survive to Fight Another Day
How to recognize and defend the most common submissions
+

Recognizing a submission before it is fully locked is the skill that determines longevity in BJJ. Tap early and learn — or get injured and miss time. Both paths lead to the same knowledge eventually. The smart path is tapping early and often while building the defenses that make submissions harder to complete.

T-Rex Arms — The Golden Rule of Survival Elbows glued to the ribs at all times when on the bottom. Reaching or extending arms leads directly to Americanas and Armbars. Tight elbows protect you from 80% of upper body submissions.
Protecting the Neck Basic posture and grip-fighting to defend against the cross-collar choke and rear-naked choke. Chin tucked, hands active, posture strong.
The Most Important Defense — Tapping Tap early, tap clearly — physically and verbally. Tapping is not losing. Tapping is the system working correctly. It protects you and your training partner and lets everyone come back tomorrow.
Tap early, tap often. Protect yourself, learn the position, come back tomorrow. Longevity in BJJ is measured in years of consistent training — not in surviving one round by refusing to tap.

Triangle Defense
2
Arm Bar Defense — most common submission at white belt
3
Kimura Defense
4
Triangle Twist Defense
★ Black Belt Detail — Submission Defense
Submission defense is not about escaping after a submission is locked — it is about never letting it get fully locked in the first place. The moment you feel a submission starting is the moment to defend. Not a second later. Recognition is the skill. Everything else is reaction time.
🧠
Training Concepts — Sport, Self-Defense & Live Training
How BJJ applies both on the mat and in real-world situations
+

The Intro 2 BJJ class closes with an understanding of how all the techniques learned in the curriculum connect to two distinct goals — sport and self-defense. The same positions and submissions apply in both contexts. What changes is the mindset, the distance management, and the awareness of strikes.

Sport vs. Self-Defense In sport, the goal is positional control and submission. In self-defense, strikes change everything — distance management, clinch work, and ground control all shift when a strike is possible. Understanding both contexts from day one gives every technique a complete purpose.
What is Positional Sparring? In the Intro class, live training starts in a specific position and fights for a single goal — a sweep, an escape, or a submission. Then reset. This is how beginners learn to apply technique under real pressure without the chaos of full sparring.
Techniques Overlap Between All Three Sport BJJ, MMA grappling, and street self-defense all use the same foundational positions and submissions. Learning one is learning all three. The context changes — the techniques don't.

Self Defense to Counter Rear Bear Hug — sport meets real world
★ Black Belt Detail — Training Concepts
The rear bear hug is one of the most common real-world grabs — and one of the most direct demonstrations of why BJJ works where other martial arts struggle. A clinch, a hip drop, a takedown, and a dominant position. The same sequence happens in competition. The same sequence happens in the street. The technique does not know the difference. You do.
