North Phoenix's Longest-Running Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy
Strong Heart Academy has been North Phoenix's longest-running Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym since 2009 — led by 4th-degree black belt Professor Mike Martin and proudly affiliated with the Caio Terra Association. Caio Terra is a 12x IBJJF World Champion (10x No-Gi, 2x Gi) — an unmatched competitive record that shapes every detail of how we teach.
We offer Gi and No-Gi BJJ classes for all levels, from complete beginners to seasoned competitors. Common goals our students bring us: lose weight, meet lifelong friends, and learn to genuinely defend themselves. Whether you step on the mat for the first time or the thousandth, you'll train in a supportive, ego-free environment where everyone is welcome.
North Phoenix BJJ Classes for Beginners — Where to Start
New to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? Start here. We run a dedicated Intro to BJJ class every Tuesday and Thursday, 7:15–8:15pm — the best entry point for any adult with zero experience. Every class follows the same structure: warm-up, technical demonstration from the professor, drilling, then live rolls. You'll always know what's coming. BJJ is built on leverage, not strength — a smaller person can control and submit a larger opponent using joint locks, pins, and positional control. It's the most practical self-defense martial art in the world, and it's more accessible than it looks. Our full curriculum is available through our video service so students can review techniques between classes.

North Phoenix Martial Arts & BJJ Classes for All Ages and Skill Levels
BJJ Fundamentals
White-to-blue belt curriculum covering offense, defense, and core technique. The best starting point for any beginner — all levels welcome. Structured around a 6-month rotating syllabus so you always know what's being taught.
No-Gi / MMA 101
Included with BJJ enrollment. No-Gi removes the fabric grips and changes what chokes and controls are available — great for sport and real-world application. Classes cover wrestling, submissions, and stand-up in a controlled, progressive format.
Advanced BJJ
Blue belt and up (or by professor approval). Higher-level drilling, live sparring against advanced training partners, and competition preparation. Caio Terra won the No-Gi World Championship ten years straight — that competitive detail shapes everything we teach at this level.
Women’s BJJ
No experience necessary. BJJ is the most proven martial art for women's real-world self-defense — built on leverage, not strength. Our coed training environment is intentional: working with partners of different sizes accelerates technique and prepares you for realistic scenarios. Ego-free, beginner-friendly, and genuinely empowering.
North Phoenix BJJ — Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes. Our Intro to BJJ class runs every Tuesday and Thursday, 7:15–8:15pm — built specifically for adults with zero experience. No partner experience needed, no jargon, no pressure. For daytime options, BJJ 101 runs Monday and Wednesday at noon and 7pm and covers the same fundamentals in a structured format. Both are great starting points.
-
We have students who started in their 40s, 50s, and 60s. One of our black belts is approaching 60 and still rolling strong. BJJ is built on leverage and technique, not youth or athleticism — which is exactly why it rewards people who slow down and actually learn it. If mobility is a concern, stretching or yoga beforehand helps. Show up, tell us where you're at, and we'll meet you there.
-
Everyone is out of shape for BJJ when they start — including athletes. It's a different kind of fitness. You'll be tired after your first class. That's normal and part of it. Dozens of our students have had significant weight loss and fitness transformations by simply showing up consistently. The mat is the workout. The best way to get fit for BJJ is to train BJJ.
-
Absolutely — and BJJ might be the single best martial art for women. It's built on leverage, not strength, meaning a smaller person can genuinely control and submit a larger opponent. From a real-world self-defense standpoint, most dangerous situations end up on the ground or in a grab, and BJJ is specifically designed for that range. We train coed intentionally: working with partners of different sizes builds better technique and prepares you for realistic scenarios. Ego-free environment, always.
-
Live sparring — called rolling — is part of BJJ. It's what separates it from forms-based martial arts and makes it work in the real world. That said, you control your experience. In Intro and Fundamentals classes, rolling is lighter and technique-focused. In Advanced class, it's more intense and competition-caliber. You're never forced into anything you're not ready for, but honest growth in BJJ requires getting comfortable being uncomfortable. We'll help you get there at your own pace.
-
Just show up. Bring water and sandals that are easy to take on and off. For your trial class, all you need is athletic clothes (rash guard or t-shirt, shorts or spats), clipped nails, and good hygiene. We'll handle the rest. Your first day we provide the gi (uniform) for the trial class. Most importantly: relax. We all started from the bottom, and our students genuinely look out for each other.
-
Clipped finger and toenails before every class — no exceptions. Come to the mat clean and in a washed Gi. No bare feet in the bathroom, ever. Mats are cleaned after class as a team. These aren't arbitrary rules — they're what make a grappling gym a place people actually want to train in. Take care of your training partners and they'll take care of you.
-
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is the original lineage — the Gracie family brought BJJ to prominence and their foundational techniques are still taught everywhere. Modern BJJ has evolved significantly since then, especially at the competitive level. At Strong Heart, we're affiliated with the Caio Terra Association — Caio is a 12x IBJJF World Champion whose technical system is widely regarded as one of the most refined in the sport. You get the foundation and the modern game.
-
Gi BJJ is trained in a traditional uniform — you can grip the fabric, which opens up a wide range of chokes and controls. No-Gi removes the uniform, shifting the focus to wrestling, body control, and submission grappling. Both are included with enrollment at Strong Heart. Most students find the Gi builds a stronger technical foundation early on, while No-Gi sharpens speed and adaptability.
-
Longer than almost any other martial art — typically 6 to 9 years of consistent training. That's not a bug, it's the point. A BJJ black belt genuinely means something. The journey through white, blue, purple, and brown belt is where most of the real growth happens. Most students find that within a year of training, the belt becomes the least interesting part of why they show up.
-
We have options to fit different commitments — month-to-month memberships are available, and we regularly offer specials that make getting started even easier. No pressure, no one-size-fits-all. Reach out or stop by and we'll walk you through what makes sense for where you're at.
