BJJ for Beginners in North Phoenix — What to Expect at Strong Heart Academy

Starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for the first time can feel intimidating. You might be wondering: Will I get hurt? Will I look foolish? Do I need to be in shape first? At Strong Heart Academy in North Phoenix, we've helped hundreds of complete beginners take their first step onto the mat — and the answer to all three of those questions is no. Here's exactly what you can expect.

You Don't Need Any Experience to Start

This is the most important thing to understand about BJJ at Strong Heart Academy: we built our program for people who have never grappled a day in their lives. Professor Mike Martin, our 4th Degree Black Belt founder, began as a white belt just like every student who walks through our doors. The mat is a level playing field, and our coaching staff — over nine active black belts — are trained to meet students exactly where they are.

You don't need to be fit, flexible, strong, or athletic. The art of BJJ is built on leverage and technique, not brute force. Some of our most technically skilled students were complete couch-to-mat beginners when they arrived.

What Happens in Your First Class

Here's a walk-through of what a typical beginner experience looks like at Strong Heart Academy:

Warm-Up and Movement Drills

Every class begins with a structured warm-up designed to build the core movement patterns BJJ relies on: shrimping, bridging, forward rolls, and hip escapes. You'll feel a little awkward at first — everyone does. That's completely normal.

Technique Instruction

Professors break down one or two specific techniques in each class, drilling them step by step with a partner. Our coaches are patient, encouraging, and skilled at explaining the 'why' behind every move. You'll drill each technique repeatedly until your body starts to understand it.

Positional Sparring

Toward the end of class, students do controlled positional sparring — practicing what they've learned in a live (but supervised and safe) setting. As a beginner, you'll start with basic positions and gradually build from there.

Cool-Down and Community

Every class ends with a bow and cool-down. One of the things our students consistently mention in reviews is the culture: egos are left at the door, and every person in the room — from white belt to black belt — wants you to get better. This isn't a competitive gym culture. It's a community.

What to Bring on Day One

  • Comfortable athletic clothing (for your first free trial — a Gi is required later)

  • A mouthpiece (required for all students)

  • Clipped nails and clean clothes — mat hygiene is taken seriously at Strong Heart

  • A signed waiver (available at the front desk or online)

  • An open mind and willingness to tap out when needed — tapping is always encouraged, never frowned upon

What You'll Feel After Your First Month

Most beginners report the same progression: the first week feels chaotic, the second week starts to click, and by the first month you're hooked. You'll feel stronger, more focused, and genuinely excited to get back on the mat. Our students don't just show up for the fitness — they show up because BJJ changes how they move through the world.

Adult Programs at Strong Heart Academy

We offer both Gi BJJ and No-Gi BJJ for adults, with morning and evening class slots to fit around work and family schedules. Our No-Gi classes focus on wrestling takedowns, leg locks, and submission grappling without the traditional uniform — a fast-paced, athletic complement to Gi training.

Train Online If You Can't Make It In

Can't always make it to the gym? Strong Heart Academy also offers BJJ2GO — structured online video training with warm-ups, drills, and technique instruction you can access anytime. It's a great way to supplement your in-person training and keep improving on your own schedule.

Your first class at Strong Heart Academy is completely free — no experience, no pressure, and a uniform is provided. We're at 3150 E Union Hills Dr #115, North Phoenix, AZ 85050. Call (602) 487-9828 or visit strongheartacademy.com to book your free trial.
